Electronic invoicing (e-invoicing) becomes mandatory for all UK VAT-registered businesses starting April 1, 2029, covering both business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-government (B2G) transactions

The UK e-invoicing mandate is coming. From April 2029, the government plans to require all VAT invoices between businesses, and between businesses and the public sector, to be issued electronically in a structured format rather than as PDFs or paper. For buyers, finance and accounts payable teams, that is a big shift in how invoices arrive. It is also a good reason to look at what happens to an invoice after it lands. Here is what has been announced so far, and how i2B helps you get your purchase-to-pay process ready.

What has been announced about the UK e-invoicing mandate

The key points so far, from the UK government:

  • Budget 2025 (November 2025): the government confirmed that e-invoicing will become mandatory for all VAT invoices from 2029, with a detailed implementation roadmap to be published at Budget 2026. You can read the government’s consultation response on GOV.UK.
  • June 2026: in its Tax update 2026 policy paper, the government announced that the Peppol network will be the core interoperability network for e-invoicing in the UK, so businesses and software developers can start planning.
  • Still to come: the roadmap is expected to set out milestones, standards and support for smaller businesses. The government has also said it will keep talking to stakeholders about legacy systems that cannot connect to the new framework.

The detail is still being worked out, but the direction is clear. Structured, machine-readable invoices are on their way, and the businesses that prepare early will have the smoothest transition.

E-invoicing changes the format, not the job

An e-invoice is easier to read than a scanned PDF, but it still has to be checked. Was there a purchase order? Were the goods or services actually received? Do the price and quantity match what was agreed? Who needs to approve it? Then it needs to be posted to your ERP and paid on time.

If those steps run on email, spreadsheets and manual keying today, a new invoice format on its own will not fix them. The UK e-invoicing mandate is a natural moment to tidy up the whole purchase-to-pay process, so that structured invoice data flows straight into a process that can use it.

How i2B helps you prepare for e-invoicing

i2B is a cloud-based Purchase-to-Pay platform that sits alongside your existing ERP. Several parts of it already support the kind of digital, structured invoice process the mandate is pushing towards.

Invoices that start with a purchase order

The cleanest invoice is one that matches a purchase order. In i2B, orders are sent to suppliers and tracked through acceptance, delivery and invoicing, with PO references enforced on invoices. We covered this in more detail in Purchase Order Software: How i2B Keeps Every PO on Track.

Suppliers submitting invoices online

With the free i2B Supplier Portal, suppliers can submit invoices against their orders and check invoice status on any device, with no software to install. That means invoice data arrives digitally and in the right place, rather than in a shared mailbox. See how buyers and suppliers stay aligned in Are You and Your Suppliers on the Same Page?

Automatic matching and approval

i2B supports 2-way and 3-way matching, checking invoices against the purchase order and goods receipt. Invoices that match can be auto-authorised, and anything that needs attention goes into a manual checking folder for your team to review.

A bridge for suppliers who are not digital yet

Not every supplier will move to e-invoicing at the same pace. i2B AP Automation can pick up PDF or scanned invoices from a mailbox, shared drive or forwarded email and extract the data using AI, with no templates to set up, at six times the speed of manual data entry. Find out more on our AP Automation page.

Straight into your ERP

Approved invoices are posted into your ERP accounts payable system, so there is no re-keying between systems. i2B integrates with the major ERP platforms, as we explained in i2B integration with ERP systems.

Experience with e-invoicing beyond the UK

E-invoicing is already established in many countries, and i2B has delivered it before. In one international roll-out in Mexico, i2B provided a full source-to-pay process from RFQ to purchase order, shipment notices and e-invoicing, all integrated with the customer’s ERP. That experience of connecting suppliers, orders and invoices into one digital flow is exactly what the UK e-invoicing mandate will ask of UK businesses.

Three steps to take now

You do not need to wait for the roadmap to start preparing:

  • Review how invoices arrive today. How many come by email, paper or PDF, and how many are matched to a purchase order?
  • Get suppliers working digitally. Moving suppliers onto a portal for orders, deliveries and invoices now makes the later switch much easier for everyone.
  • Automate the checks. Matching, approvals and ERP posting should not depend on manual effort, whatever format the invoice arrives in.
